ABOUT

Martha Swasey, founder of Signal School of Physical Education, and son Vin Swasey.
Founded by Martha Swasey in 1978 to augment physical education programs in the tri-state area, Signal School of Physical Education (SSPE) previously served 27 communities. The program now operates in a permanent facility on Signal Mountain. A non-profit 501(c) (3) organization, the school's goal is to provide quality sports training at an affordable price.
Martha Swasey actively coached at SSPE until the age of 93. She was also the State Champion in ten sports in the Senior Olympic Games, a National Champion in Archery, and a Silver Medalist in Racquetball. SSPE is proudly carrying on her legacy.
Signal School of Physical Education was responsible for introducing soccer into the public sports curriculum and was instrumental in the formation of an organized fencing club in Chattanooga. The school has conducted intensive two-week sports clinics in Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Nassau, Venezuela, and Hawaii.
Signal School of Physical Education offers classes in Gymnastics, Tumbling, Cheerleading, as well as Summer Camps. Seasonal classes are offered in Tennis and Swimming. Our largest program is the gymnastics program, and the Town Council of Signal Mountain has recognized both the school and its Director, Charity Painter, for their performance and past championship seasons.
EXCELLENCE IN MOTION
From our award-winning Gymnastics program—recognized by the Signal Mountain Town Council for its championship seasons—to our seasonal clinics in Tennis and Swimming, we focus on more than just "play." We provide structured, expert instruction designed to build:
-
Athletic Skill: From foundational motor skills to competitive-level techniques.
-
Character: Fostering discipline, confidence, and sportsmanship.
-
Community: A safe, supportive environment where generations of families have grown up.
Under the leadership of Director Charity Painter, SSPE continues to be a home for champions and beginners alike. Whether your child is joining us for summer camp or training with our state-championship travel teams, they are becoming part of a 45-year tradition of fitness and fun.
